What Is the Kambo Ceremony?

The Kambo ceremony is a traditional healing ritual originating in the Amazon basin, in which the secretion of the giant monkey frog (Phyllomedusa bicolor) is used for purgative and cleansing purposes. A trained practitioner creates small superficial burns—typically on the upper arm or leg—using a smoldering stick or vine, then applies the frog secretion to these points to promote rapid absorption through the lymphatic system. Indigenous communities have performed this ceremony for centuries to remove “bad energy,” toxins, and parasites, viewing the frog’s peptides as a powerful natural medicine.

Benefits of the Ceremony

  • Deep Detoxification: Induces a forceful purge—through vomiting and diarrhea—that may help eliminate toxins, parasites, mold, and Candida from the body.
  • Immune System Support: Bioactive peptides are believed to modulate immune function and enhance overall resistance to illness.
  • Pain Relief & Anti Inflammatory Effects: Certain peptides in the secretion exhibit anti inflammatory and analgesic properties, potentially easing chronic aches and joint pain.
  • Improved Mood & Mental Clarity: Participants often report reductions in anxiety, stress hormone levels (e.g., cortisol), and gains in focus and emotional balance after the purge.
  • Support for Addiction Treatment: Anecdotally, Kambo has been used to help break addictive patterns and support recovery from substance dependencies.

Preparation for the Ceremony

Participants should follow these general guidelines; always defer to your practitioner’s specific protocol:

  • Fasting & Diet: Fast for 8–12 hours before your session—eat light meals the day before, then abstain from food and beverages (other than small amounts of water/tea when allowed) on the day itself.
  • Hydration: Limit fluids to ≤500 ml, avoiding excessive water intake and all caffeine at least 2 hours prior; some facilitators permit herbal tea or a spoonful of honey in water.
  • Lifestyle Restrictions: Refrain from alcohol, recreational drugs, nicotine, and heavy medications for several days leading up to the ceremony; arrive with a clear mind and set personal intentions.
  • Physical & Mental Prep: An Epsom salt bath the night before can help relax muscles and focus the mind; some recommend abstaining from sexual activity immediately before to conserve energy.
  • What to Bring: Pack a towel, a bucket for purge, comfortable loose fitting clothes, and any personal items (e.g., blanket, journal) for post ceremony rest.

Customer Testimonials

Simona Jones

I spent a week with the Association of Peruvian shamans in their beautiful temple in Patapata. During this time I had Ayahuasca , Watchuma, Karpay and 5 Andean ceremonies, all ceremonies with different shamans. It was an unforgetabke experience, healing and enlightening that opened a new path for me. I also want to thank Johana and Amaru, who assisted in all the ceremonies and took really good care of me during my stay. I can not recommend enough their retreats.
