What Is the Temazcal Ceremony?

The Temazcal ceremony is an ancient Mesoamerican purification ritual that takes place inside a sweat lodge—a dome-shaped structure traditionally made of natural materials like clay, stone, and wood. The word Temazcal comes from the Nahuatl language and means "house of heat." Guided by a spiritual leader (often called a temazcalero), participants experience intense steam created by pouring herbal-infused water over hot volcanic stones placed in a central pit.

The ceremony is designed to simulate a rebirth process, cleanse the body and mind, and foster deep spiritual connection with nature, the ancestors, and one’s inner self.

Benefits of the Temazcal Ceremony

  • Physical Detoxification: The intense heat and sweating help eliminate toxins from the body, cleanse the skin, and support the lymphatic system.
  • Respiratory & Immune Health: Steam infused with medicinal herbs like eucalyptus, chamomile, or rosemary can help clear the lungs, sinuses, and boost immunity.
  • Mental & Emotional Release: The guided chants, darkness, and heat often bring emotional catharsis and clarity. Many participants experience emotional release and healing.
  • Spiritual Reconnection: The Temazcal is a sacred space that reconnects participants with Earth elements, ancestors, and their own spiritual path.
  • Muscle & Joint Relief: The heat soothes tension, promotes circulation, and reduces pain or stiffness in muscles and joints.

Preparation for the Ceremony

To fully benefit from the Temazcal, consider the following preparation steps:

  1. Hydration: Drink plenty of water in the hours before the ceremony, but avoid heavy food or alcohol.
  2. Light Meals: Eat only light, clean meals (vegetables, fruits, broths) 4–6 hours beforehand. Avoid red meat or dairy.
  3. No Stimulants: Avoid coffee, alcohol, tobacco, or strong medications on the day of the ceremony.
  4. Mental Intentions: Take time to set your personal intention for the ceremony—whether physical, emotional, or spiritual.
  5. What to Bring: Lightweight clothing (or swimsuit), towel, change of dry clothes, water bottle, and something for grounding post-ceremony (fruit, journal, etc.).

Customer Testimonials

Simona Jones

I spent a week with the Association of Peruvian shamans in their beautiful temple in Patapata. During this time I had Ayahuasca , Watchuma, Karpay and 5 Andean ceremonies, all ceremonies with different shamans. It was an unforgetabke experience, healing and enlightening that opened a new path for me. I also want to thank Johana and Amaru, who assisted in all the ceremonies and took really good care of me during my stay. I can not recommend enough their retreats.
